⊙ Who was Plato?

Plato (427 BC - 348 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher, considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy, and an innovator of the written dialogues and the dialectic form. He raised issues that would later develop into all the major branches of theoretical and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic school in Athens, where he taught the theory later known as Platonism.

Plato's most famous contribution is his theory of metaphysics (or the Ideas), which has been interpreted as a solution to what is now known as the universal problem. He was greatly influenced by former Socratic thinkers such as Pythagoras, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, but much of the information about them is derived primarily from Plato.
