Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 10' by Friedrich Hayek

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 10' by Friedrich Hayek

The “strong man” is given power.

In desperation, “planners” authorize the new party leader to hammer out a plan and force its obedience.

Later, they'll dispense with him, or so they think.

< The road to serfdom – Cartoon 10 >

In this 10th cartoon of "The Road to Serfdom," a "strong man" gains power. In desperation, "planners" authorize the new party leader to devise a plan and enforce its obedience. However, they intend to dispose of him later, or so they think. This episode illustrates how the desire for power can threaten freedom and emphasizes the need for vigilance in preserving freedom. Attempts by the "strong man" or "planners" to abuse power or undermine freedom can ultimately threaten democracy and individual liberty. Derived from Hayek's "The Road to Serfdom," the concept warns of the gradual transition towards totalitarianism as power becomes concentrated and freedom is restricted.

Friedrich Hayek was a renowned Austrian-British economist and philosopher, known for his work on classical liberalism and free-market capitalism. He is  where he warned against the dangers of central planning and totalitarianism, arguing for the importance of individual freedom and limited government intervention in economic affairs.

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 9' by Friedrich Hayek

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 9' by Friedrich Hayek

Confidence in “planners” fades.

The more the planners improvise, the greater the disturbance to normal business.

Everybody suffers. People now feel – rightly – that “planners” can't get things done.

Let's get a man who can make a plan work.

< The road to serfdom – Cartoon 9 >

This cartoon, the 9th in 'The Road to Serfdom,' emphasizes the declining trust in planners. It highlights that as planners attempt to improve their plans, they cause greater disruption to everyday business, leading to suffering for everyone. As a result, people now feel that planners are incapable of handling tasks. The final sentence, 'Let's get a man who can make a plan work,' demands finding someone capable of executing plans, indicating a questioning of planners' abilities and a willingness to seek alternatives.

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 7' by Friedrich Hayek

They try to “sell” the plan to all.

In an unsuccessful effort to “educate” people to uniform view, “planners” establish a giant propaganda machine – which the coming dictator will find handy.

< The road to serfdom – Cartoon 7 >

This cartoon is the 7th in the series titled "The Road to Serfdom." It describes the planners' efforts to "sell" the plan to everyone, and their establishment of a massive propaganda machine after failing in their attempts to "educate" people to a uniform view. This will be conveniently used by the impending dictator. It serves as a warning about planned economies and dictatorship.

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 6' by Friedrich Hayek

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 6' by Friedrich Hayek

“Planners” hate to force agreement.…

Most “national planners” are well-meaning idealists, and balk at any use of force.

The hope some miracle of public agreement for their patchwork plan.

< The road to serfdom – Cartoon 6 >

In this cartoon, it emphasizes that "planners" do not seek to enforce consensus or coerce agreement. "Planners" typically refer to government officials or central authorities who often seek to formulate plans for society or the economy. They are usually idealists, hoping for a miraculous public consensus on their plans. This is often an unrealistic ideal, indicating that central authoritarianism can infringe upon individual freedoms.

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 5' by Friedrich Hayek

And citizens can't agree either.…

When the “planners” finally patch up a temporary plan months later, citizens in turn disagree.

What the farmer likes, the factory worker doesn't like.

Imagine that!

Politicians using government power to buy favor with the constituency.

< The road to serfdom – Cartoon 5 >

This cartoon illustrates how centralized planning can lead to discord and dissatisfaction among citizens. Even after the "planners" devise a temporary plan, citizens may oppose it for various reasons. For instance, what the farmer prefers may not sit well with the factory worker. In such situations, politicians may attempt to win favor with voters by leveraging government power. The cartoon carries a message that planned economies or centralized regimes may disregard the diversity of opinions among citizens.

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 4' by Friedrich Hayek

Quote of the Day : 'The road to serfdom – Cartoon 4' by Friedrich Hayek

But they can't agree on one Utopia.…

With peace, a new legislature meets, but “win the war” unity is gone.

The “planners” nearly come to blows.

Each has his own plan, each won't budge.

< The road to serfdom – Cartoon 4 >

This cartoon is the fourth in the series titled "The Road to Serfdom." It depicts a scenario where peace has been achieved after the war, but there is a lack of consensus among people about the ideal nation. Although a new legislative body is formed, the unified belief of "winning the war" is no longer present. Instead, conflict arises among the "planners" who each pursue their own plans without compromise. This illustrates one of the key themes of the book, showing how central planning and command economies pose a fatal threat to the ideal of a free market economy.

He is  where he warned against the dangers of central planning and totalitarianism, arguing for the importance of individual freedom and limited government intervention in economic affairs.
