⊙ Quote of the Day: MacArthur's Daring Gamble

MacArthur's Daring Gamble at Inchon

I realize that Inchon is a 500-to-1 gamble, but I am used to taking such odds.

We shall land at Inchon and I shall crush them.

- Gen. Douglas MacArthur -

This is one of the most famous quotes attributed to General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War (1950-1953), when he was preparing for the Inchon landing (Operation Chromite). The Inchon landing began on 15 September 1950 and ended on 19 September 1950, when United Nations forces led by MacArthur landed on the shores of Inchon and attacked the rear of the North Korean army. It is considered a major military operation that marked a turning point in the war. In this quote, General MacArthur says, "Inchon is a 500-to-1 gamble," implying that the operation was a very risky endeavor with a low chance of success. However, MacArthur believed that he had the ability to overcome these difficult circumstances, and he expresses his strong determination to defeat the enemy (North Korea and China) through this operation by saying, "We shall land at Inchon and I shall crush them."

⊙ Operation Chromite

The Battle of Inchon was an amphibious landing on the Korean Peninsula on 15 September 1950, at the height of the Korean War, led by United Nations commander General Douglas MacArthur. The operation involved the landings of the US 1st Marine Division and the US 7th Infantry Division under the command of General Edward Almond, comprising more than 75,000 troops and 261 naval vessels. These forces included regimental-level units of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps attached to the US 1st Marine Division and the Republic of Korea Army's 17th Infantry Regiment attached to the US 7th Infantry Division. They successfully recaptured Inchon, paving the way for UN forces to advance on Seoul over the next 13 days. The operation was codenamed Operation Chromite.
