Your Greatest Rival is Yourself: Quotes from Piano no Mori

Conquer your inner enemy! 🎹 Discover powerful lessons from "The Perfect World of KAI" on self-reflection, perseverance, and overcoming self-doubt.

⊙ Quote of the day: Your Greatest Battle is Within

Your Greatest Rival is Yourself: Quotes from Piano no Mori

Your enemy is yourself.

- The perfect world of KAI: ピアノの森 -

This quote is from the Japanese anime The Perfect World of KAI (ピアノの森, Piano no Mori, or Forest of Piano) by Makoto Isshiki, which is centered around classical music. The story is a coming-of-age tale about a boy named Kai Ichinose and his friend Shuhei Amamiya, who are born in a slum called "the edge of the forest" but possess a natural talent for playing the piano. The narrative follows their journey as they grow into world-class pianists, both as competitors and friends.

The quote of the day was spoken by Kai Ichinose's teacher, Sousuke Ajino, as advice and encouragement while Kai was practicing Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 2 in F major, K. 280, a required piece for the National Student Piano Competition. "Your enemy is yourself" carries a powerful message about self-reflection and personal growth. It suggests that to progress, we must overcome our own weaknesses, laziness, and resignation. The quote emphasizes that the greatest challenges we face in life often come from within. For a pianist like Kai, the path to mastery is not just about competing with others but also about overcoming his own fears, doubts, and limitations. The "enemy" represents the internal obstacles—such as self-doubt, fear of failure, and negative thinking—that hinder achieving greatness.

When I was a student, I suddenly remembered a phrase I had written on my desk: "Man is his own worst enemy." It seems to me that the first step to overcoming any difficulty and progressing through life is self-reflection and overcoming our inner struggles.

Your Greatest Rival is Yourself: Quotes from Piano no Mori

You have to play your own version of K. 280.

If you don't make it your own soon.

Mozart's ghost is going to come back for his sheet music.

- The perfect world of KAI: ピアノの森 -

My piano.

My own K. 280.

Don't misunderstand, Ichinose.

Your enemy isn't Mozart.

Your enemy is yourself.

Pascal’s Quotes On Justice, Power, Thought, and Human Nature

Pascal's timeless wisdom on justice, power, and human nature. Explore his profound quotes on thought, imagination, and the pursuit of truth. Discover the dangers of unbalanced power and the importance of a just society.

⊙ Quote of the day: Justice and Power

Pascal’s Quotes On Justice, Power, Thought, and Human Nature

Justice without power is inefficient;

power without justice is tyranny.

- Blaise Pascal -

This quote is attributed to Blaise Pascal, a 17th-century French philosopher, mathematician, writer, and scientist. Although he is renowned for his contributions to mathematics and science, Pascal spent significant time studying philosophy and theology. His writings, such as Pensées and letters to friends, reveal many of his profound ideas, including his famous quote, “Man is a thinking reed.”

Today’s Quote of the Day offers deep insights into the relationship between justice and power in society and politics. Pascal warns of the dangers when justice and power are disconnected.

  • Justice without power is ineffective: No matter how righteous justice is, if there is no power to enforce it, it remains ineffective and impotent in practice. Pascal emphasizes that justice requires the power to be applied meaningfully.
  • Power without justice is tyranny: Conversely, when power is exercised without a foundation of justice, it inevitably leads to tyranny and oppression. Pascal cautions that power must always be wielded on just principles.

Just judgments and moral principles are meaningless without the ability to enforce them, much like a society that has laws but no police or courts to ensure they are upheld. Similarly, having power without just standards leads to violence and oppression—similar to dictatorships or totalitarian states. Pascal’s quote succinctly defines the inseparable nature of justice and power. A true society is one in which power is exercised based on just principles.

A rule of law requires that laws be applied fairly to everyone, and that law enforcement agencies use their power based on just judgments. In a democracy, politicians—elected to represent the people—must respect the will of the people and strive to create a just society. Without justice and the rule of law, democracies can devolve into legalized forms of totalitarianism or dictatorship, as seen in regimes like the Nazis or certain communist groups during World War II.

In recent years, we've witnessed organizations and political figures around the world fail to make just decisions, often relying on the support of fanatical crowds. This highlights the importance of Pascal’s message about justice and the balance of power.

Own Your Actions: The Power of Personal Responsibility

Take responsibility for your actions. These quotes remind us that success and failure depend on our own efforts, not excuses. Embrace challenges and strive for improvement.

⊙ Quote of the day: Take Responsibility - The Importance of Self-Responsibility

Own Your Actions: The Power of Personal Responsibility

A bad workman blames his tools.

- English proverb -

  • A bad workman always blames his tools.
  • An ill workman always quarrels with his tools.
  • A bad workman finds fault with his tools.
  • A bad shearer never has a good sickle.

The proverb's origins are unclear, but it is believed to have originated in 13th-century Europe or England in the 16th century. Like the sayings "A bad workman blames his tools," it reminds us to take responsibility for our own actions when we fail or make mistakes, rather than blaming external factors. It suggests that a skilled or competent person can overcome challenges and achieve success despite limitations, while an incompetent person will always find excuses for their shortcomings. The proverb warns against an attitude that refuses to acknowledge one's own lack of ability or effort and tries to avoid situations with excuses.

⊙ Clumsy Skills, Full of Excuses: It's Not the Tools, It's Your Lack of Skill

This collection of quotes focuses on personal accountability and the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own actions and failures. The common theme is that it’s not external factors, such as tools or circumstances, that lead to failure, but rather a lack of effort or skill. These quotes emphasize the idea that making excuses only hinders personal growth and success. True achievement comes from owning your mistakes and working to improve, rather than shifting the blame elsewhere.

Aging with Grace: Quotes Celebrating Graceful Aging and the Spirit of Life

⊙ Quote of the Day: Aging Gracefully

Aging with Grace: Quotes Celebrating Graceful Aging and the Spirit of Life

More than anything else,

I’d like to be an old man with a good face, like Hitchcock or Picasso.

- Sir Sean Connery -

This quote by Sir Sean Connery, who passed away on October 31, 2020, reflects his desire to age with grace, much like Alfred Hitchcock or Pablo Picasso. He likely meant that in addition to physical appearance, he aspired to embody a life well-lived, full of character and personality.

Although Connery is best known for his suave portrayal of James Bond in the 007 franchise, he is equally memorable for his distinguished roles in films like Highlander, The Untouchables, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

After watching the recent release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, I wish he had lived to make the last Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford, who is now over 80 years old.

The Dark Art of Propaganda: Joseph Goebbels' Disturbing Quotes

Uncover the chilling tactics of Nazi propaganda master Joseph Goebbels. Learn about his manipulation techniques and the dangers of a controlled press. Protect yourself from misinformation and stay informed.

⊙ Quote of the day: The Dangers of a Controlled Press

The Dark Art of Propaganda: Joseph Goebbels' Disturbing Quotes

Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.

- Joseph Goebbels -

This phrase is attributed to Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany, who was instrumental in spreading Nazi ideology among the German people through propaganda and manipulation of public opinion. Goebbels used the metaphor of the press as “a great keyboard on which the government can play,” meaning that if the press is controlled by the government, it can be used to manipulate and shape public opinion. He saw the press as a tool for the government to exploit, effectively disseminating the propaganda and ideology of a dictatorship.

This quote illustrates how democracy and the free flow of information can be greatly undermined when the press is controlled by the government without freedom and independence. While Goebbels' words illustrate the dark side of the press throughout history, they are still a valid warning in the modern world. It’s essential to defend press freedom and approach media consumption with a critical eye.

Paul Joseph Goebbels, a politician in Nazi Germany and one of Adolf Hitler's closest confidants, was the chief propagandist and glorifier of the Nazi Party. Often referred to as the "Lord of Propaganda," Goebbels used his powerful oratory skills to spread extreme anti-Semitism and played a key role in orchestrating the Holocaust and other atrocities of the Nazi regime. His methods of propaganda and demagoguery have left a lasting impact on global politics and media, both before and after World War II.

We've compiled some of his most chilling quotes about lies and propaganda to ensure that such figures and political organizations never rise again. Let’s remain vigilant against the lies and propaganda spread by totalitarian, socialist, and communist regimes, as well as the propaganda still being produced by some politicians today.

⊙ Joseph Goebbels' Disturbing Quotes on Lies and Propaganda

Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi regime’s propaganda minister, was a master manipulator who played a pivotal role in spreading Adolf Hitler’s ideology. His chilling quotes reflect his deep understanding of the power of lies, manipulation, and propaganda. These statements reveal the dangerous methods he used to control public opinion, undermine democratic values, and shape Nazi Germany’s narrative. By understanding these quotes, we can better recognize the threats of misinformation and propaganda in both historical and modern contexts.

  • Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • You can’t change the masses. They will always be the same: dumb, gluttonous and forgetful. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated are confident they are acting on their own free will. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • The worst enemy of any propaganda is intellectualism. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • Everything is what you make of it, even yourself. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • We shall go down in history as the greatest statesmen of all time, or as the greatest criminals. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it, and you will even come to believe it yourself. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • Down with democratic parliamentarianism! - Joseph Goebbels -

  • The best propaganda is that which, as it were, works invisibly, penetrates the whole of life without the public having any knowledge of the propagandistic initiative. - Joseph Goebbels -

  • You can’t change the masses. They will always be the same: dumb, gluttonous and forgetful. - Joseph Goebbels -

See with Your Heart: Love, Friendship, and Responsibility in The Little Prince

This passage from The Little Prince explores the deeper meanings of love, friendship, and responsibility, reminding us that what truly matters is invisible to the eyes.

⊙ Quote of the day: The Invisible Truth, Love and Friendship Beyond Appearances

See with Your Heart: Love, Friendship, and Responsibility in The Little Prince

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;

what is essential is invisible to the eyes.

- The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) : Antoine de Saint-Exupéry -

It's a famous passage from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, Chapter 21, which emphasizes that the true nature of the world cannot be understood through external, visible things, but rather through what is felt and understood by the heart. It conveys the realization that the essence of love, friendship, and human connection lies beyond what the eye can see, and that only the heart can truly recognize this.

We are often deceived by appearances and lose sight of what truly matters. It is our spiritual growth and relationships, not material possessions, that bring us genuine happiness. Human relationships are far more valuable than what we perceive with our eyes, and love and friendship are the most precious values that enrich our lives.

Don't be misled by appearances; look with your heart. With this mindset, we hope you will cherish the true value of love and friendship.

  • It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes.
  • What is essential is invisible to the eye.
  • Men have forgotten this truth.

- But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends anymore. If you want a friend, tame me.

See with Your Heart: Love, Friendship, and Responsibility in The Little Prince

⊙ The Little Prince: Chapter 21.

It was then that the fox appeared. “Good morning,” said the fox.

“Good morning,” the little prince responded politely although when he turned around he saw nothing.

“I am right here,” the voice said, “under the apple tree.”

“Who are you?” asked the little prince, and added,

“You are very pretty to look at.”

“I am a fox,” the fox said.

“Come and play with me,” proposed the little prince.

“I so unhappy.” “I cannot play with you,” the fox said.

“I am not tamed."

“Ah! Please excuse me,” said the little prince.

But, after some thought, he added : “What does that mean -‘tame’?”

“You do not live here,” said the fox.

“What is the that you are looking for?”

“I am looking for men,” said the little prince.

“What does that mean -‘tame’?

“Men,” said the fox.

“They have guns, and they hunt, It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?“

“No,” said the little prince. “I am looking for friends. What does that mean- ‘tame’?”

“It is an act too often neglected,” said the fox.

“It means to establish ties.” “‘To establish ties’?”

“Just that,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys.

And I have no need of you, And you, on your part, have no need of me.

To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

But if you tame me, then we shall need each other.

To me, you will be unique in all the would.

To you, I shall be unique in all the would...”

“I am beginning to understand,” said the little prince.

“There is a flower... I think that she has tamed me...”

“It is possible,” said the fox. “On the Earth one sees all sorts of things.”

“Oh, but this is not on the Earth!” said the little prince.

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

“On another planet?” “Yes.”

“Are there hunters on that planet?”

“No.” “Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?”

“No.” “nothing is perfect,” sighed the fox.

But he came back to his idea.

“My life is very monotonous,” the fox said.

“I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little board.

But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my like.

I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others.

Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground.

Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow.

And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder?

I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me.

The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad.

But you have hair that is the color of gold.

Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me!

The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you.

And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat...”

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

“Please – tame me!” he said.

“I want to, very much,” the little prince replied.

“But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand.”

“One only understands the things that one tames,” said the fox.

“Men have no more time to understand anything.

They buy things all ready made at the shops.

But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me...”

“What must I do, to tame you?” asked the little prince.

“You must be very patient,” replied the fox.

“First you will sit down at a little distance from me – like that - in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing.

Words are the source of misunderstandings.

But you will sit a little closer to me, every day...” next day the little prince came back.

“It would have been better to come back at the same hour,” said the fox.

“If, for example, you come at four o’clock in the afternoon, then at three o’clock I shall begin to be happy.

I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances.

At four o’clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about.

I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time

I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you...

One must observe the proper rites...”

“What is a rite?” asked the little prince.

“Those also are actions too often neglected,” said the fox.

“They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours.

There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls.

So Thursday is a wonderful day for me!

I can take a walk as far as the vineyards.

But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day other day, and I should never have any vacation at all.”

So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near - “Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”

“It is your own fault,” said the little prince. “I never wished you any sort of harm ; but you wanted me to tame you...”

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.

“But now you are going to cry!” said the little prince.

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox. “Then it has done you no good at all!”

“It has done me good,”said the fox,

“because of the color or the wheat filds.” And then he added :

“Go and look again at the roses.

Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret.” The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.

“You are not at all like my rose,” he said.

“As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one.

You are like my fox when I first knew him.

He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique ln all the world.”

And the roses were very much embarrassed.

“You are beautiful, but you are empty,” he went on.

“One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you – the rose that belongs to me.

But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses :

because it is she that I have watered; beause it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.”

And he went back to meet the fox. “Goodbye,” he said,

“Goodbye,” said the fox.

“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember,

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.” “It is the time I have wasted for my rose -” said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

“Men have forgotten this truth,” said the fox.

“But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, forwhat you have tamed. You are responsible for my rose...”

“I am responsible for my rose,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
